Privacy Policy

Last updated June 3, 2026

Free Stuff @ Dartmouth is a free, independent catalog. The short version: we don't run ads, we don't use cookies or cross-site trackers, and we don't sell your data. We use only privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics to see which resources are useful, and we collect the minimum needed for upvotes and community submissions — all described below.

What we collect

  • Upvotes. When you upvote a resource, your browser stores a random voter ID in localStorage (it is not tied to your name, account, or device characteristics). That ID and the resources you upvoted are saved so a resource isn't counted twice.
  • Resource submissions. If you use the Submit form, we store the resource details you enter. An email is optional — we only keep it if you choose to provide it, and only to credit you or follow up on your submission.
  • Issue reports. When you report a problem with a resource, we store only the issue type and which resource it's about. No personal information is collected.
  • Aggregate analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics, a cookieless and privacy-friendly service, to count page views and see which resources people find useful. It does not set cookies, does not follow you across other sites, and does not collect personal information or build a profile of you.
  • Newsletter (optional). If you sign up for the newsletter, we store your email to send it. We use it for nothing else, never sell or share it, and you can unsubscribe from any issue.

What we don't do

  • No advertising and no paid placement in the catalog.
  • No advertising or marketing trackers, no tracking pixels, no cookies, and no cross-site or behavioral profiling.
  • No selling, renting, or sharing of your data with advertisers or data brokers.
  • No unsolicited email. We email you only if you opt in to the newsletter, and every issue has a one-click unsubscribe.

Where data is stored

The site is hosted on Vercel and uses Supabase to store upvotes, reports, and submissions. These providers may process standard technical information (such as IP address in server logs) to operate and secure the service. We do not combine that with your activity to identify you.

Your choices

  • To reset your voter ID, clear your browser's site data for this site.
  • To browse with no data collected at all, simply don't upvote, submit, or report.
  • To have a submission or its email removed, open an issue on GitHub and we'll delete it.

Changes

If we ever add advertising or a newsletter, we will update this policy first, add a clear notice and consent where required, and keep the catalog free of cross-site trackers. Material changes will be reflected in the "last updated" date above.
